The Art of Collecting

What do you collect? People collect just about everything. Anything you can imagine can be collectible. Some collections are expensive and others never cost a dime. Many people like to collect rocks, stamps, or feathers and carefully catalogue each one. Other people have a huge mound of Beanie Babies. Often, collecting is treated as science. Either people collect for knowledge or potential profit. However, another approach to collecting is treating it as an art.

When looking for collectibles, there are several things to consider. First, do you have the space for this collection? Most people can fit a huge stamp or baseball collection in their home, but few can collect cars. Figurines take up some space, but with the help of curios and carefully placed decor, people can fit larger collections than they first realize. Secondly, you have to ask yourself if this is a collection that you can afford. Depending on your budget, collectible items can gain or lose appeal. Third, you need to determine if you are treating your collection as art or science.

Many people do not consider an item that is not limited to be collectible. (Most of our items are not limited. For limited items, look at our Disney collectibles.) They carefully chose figurines, plates, cards, comics, etc that they believe will increase in value.  If this is the approach that you choose to take for your collection, you have a lot of research ahead. You can treat your purchases as investments. The only problem with this approach is that it is difficult to truly determine what will increase in value. Any large increase usually takes a long time. And if you purchased an item that you liked, you may not want to part with it. Some mass produced items experience a huge increase in value, while some limited editions decrease in value.

Collecting as an art form involved less research, less consideration of value, and more attention to what you like. Are you a fan of frogs? Then collect frogs. The collectibles you choose will serve as accent pieces for your home, so it makes sense to choose things that you like. Then, take your collectibles and use them to decorate. Collectibles make great gifts too. If you know someone who likes frogs, you can give them one for their birthday or Christmas.
